「完全に理解した」は海外で通じるのか
日本で有名な「完全に理解した」。意味は御存知の通り「入門しただけでほぼ何も分かっていない」。プログラマーが使っている独特なプログラマー用語にはどんなものがありますか？
「プログラマーの世界では、何かを「完全に理解した」というギャグがあります」。
これは合わせて以下の「ダニング＝クルーガー効果」というやつだと説明されている。

能力が低い人には、自分を高く評価する傾向がある。
能力がまあまあ高い人は、自分を低く評価してしまう傾向もある。
Twitterでは:
会社で「C++完全に理解した」Tシャツを見ながらドイツ人に「それなんて書いてあるの？」って聞かれたので「I have installed C++ compiler」って教えてあげました
なんて語られる。笑ってしまうし、そうなんだけれど、それは我々日本語話者が「完全に理解した」→「チュートリアルこなして分かった気になった」→「I have installed C++ compiler」であると分かっているからでもある。
"I have installed C++ compiler!"
は、その面白さは伝えきれていない気がする。海外で、プログラマと「ダニング＝クルーガー効果」はどう説明されているのだろうかを調べた。

Dunning and Kruger suggest that as experience doing a job increases, overconfidence typically declines to more realistic levels. As programmers start deep diving in their areas, they start recognizing their own lack of knowledge and ability. And as they gain in knowledge, their expertise increases and their confidence levels begin to improve once again.
They suggest the following ways to overcome the overconfidence.

なので紹介してみた。英語は拙い。
"Fully understood!"
しかし反応はつかない...。
私の体感、日本の5倍の反応速度を誇る dev.to だが、響かないものなのだろうか。
そんなものなのか、と思っているうちに別の表現を発見した。

Douglas Crockford points this issue when he says “Java programmers that don’t want to learn JavaScript, will go to their grave not knowing how miserable they are”. When he says that, he talks about those pretentious developers that don’t even know what a monad or a closure is. This is miserable. This is the Dunning-Kruger Effect in action.
「Douglas Crockfordは、『JavaScriptを学ぼうとしないJavaプログラマは、自分たちがどれほど惨めな存在であるかも知らずに墓場まで行ってしまうだろう』と言うときに、この問題を指摘しています。彼がそう言うとき、彼はモナドやクロージャが何であるかさえ知らない、気取った開発者のことを言っています。これは惨めです。これがダニング・クルーガー効果の作用です。」
これはまさにこれが「完全に理解した」ではないか。つまり
- 「完全に理解した」= "Mt. Stupid"
- 「ナニモワカラナイ」= "Valley of Despair"
その後 "Slope of enlightenment"、"Plateau of sustainability" に続くようだ。
