On Audio Streaming for .NET Lab Meetups
Streaming audio is tough, isn't it!
It is difficult to capture the immersive atmosphere of a venue and deliver it online.
However, I have a strong desire to bring as many comments and interactions from the venue as possible to the online audience.
Since .NET Lab has a relatively small number of participants (usually around 20 in-person attendees), there are often moments where participants ask questions during presentations. In such cases, it is often difficult for that audio to be picked up by the online stream.
Some venues provide multiple wireless microphones, which allows us to cover that audio for streaming, but it is quite difficult when we have to rely entirely on our own equipment at venues that do not provide them.
Current Equipment
Currently, for .NET Lab's audio streaming, we use a SHURE SM58 microphone and a YAMAHA AG03 audio interface. We use this single microphone to capture and stream all the audio. While this configuration is sufficient for capturing the speaker's voice, it is not necessarily enough to convey the sounds and atmosphere of the venue.
Ideal Vision
In a real-life venue, there are small reactions and echoes to every point the speaker makes. These are things that are felt as subtle sounds. I really wish we could deliver those kinds of elements to the stream as well.
What I'm Considering
The SM58 I'm currently using is a unidirectional microphone. Because of this, the microphone pointed at the speaker has the characteristic of not picking up sound well from the audience on the opposite side. My hypothesis is: why not set up another microphone for the audience?
The AG03 I am currently using only has one microphone input. Therefore, I am considering:
Replacing the YAMAHA AG03 with a YAMAHA AG06mk2
Purchasing an additional SHURE SM57
I could have used another SM58 for the microphone, but since it won't be used for speaking directly into, I chose the SM57, considering that wind noise is unlikely to be an issue.
What Will Happen
You will be able to see the results of how the audio streaming turns out at the .NET Lab event in August 2025. Please stay tuned to see if it improves.
