Installing Zorin OS: A Windows-like Linux Distribution
Goodbye Windows
My PC broke down.
It was a reasonably priced PC that I had hoped to use for at least five years, but starting around the summer, it began freezing and shutting down. It got worse day by day until it finally wouldn't boot at all.
I hadn't planned on buying a new one for a while, but with memory prices skyrocketing, I couldn't see a clear path forward, so I purchased a new PC in a hurry.
I'm still not sure if the freezing was OS-dependent, but the recent Windows Updates had a significant impact, and dealing with things like deleting update diffs or rolling back to restore points was quite a hassle.
This led me to start considering changing the OS itself.
I figured if I was going to use a different OS, it would have to be Linux, and I decided to use a distribution that I had been curious about for a while.
That is

ZorinOS
The layout is designed with Windows in mind, so I believe I can use it without feeling out of place after switching.
It's been a long time since I last installed Linux—not since my custom PC building days.
I wonder if it will go well.

Download ZorinOS image
Download Zorin OS 18 Core.
You can skip the email address entry.
Create a bootable USB drive
I didn't have a USB drive on hand, so I bought a 32GB drive.
(I plan to use it as a Windows recovery drive once the installation is complete.)
It was only about 800 yen, so it's not a big deal.
Rufus seems to be the most common tool for creating boot drives, but it didn't go very well for me, so I used something called
Ventoy
A boot drive creation tool that allows you to try multiple OSs on a single drive.

Ventoy Official
By preparing image data (.iso) for several distributions, you can test various OSs.
Download the file and launch it.

Install screen Official
Select your USB drive, run INSTALL, and then copy the ISO data to the drive.
If you boot with the USB plugged in, an OS selection screen will appear.
UEFI Secure Boot support
UEFI is the next-generation BIOS. Security features have been enhanced, and it prevents booting if the boot procedure is not as expected.
Ventoy supports this.
When you boot it up, you might be surprised by the blue interface.
Don't overthink it and just proceed following the GIF steps below.

Select ZorinOS
Select the following item on the OS image selection screen:
Zorin-OS-18-Core-64-bit-r3.iso
OS installation
While you can operate it directly from the boot USB, installing it on the disk should make it easier to use.
Run the hard drive installation from Install Zorin OS.

User experience
Since it's designed with Windows in mind, the usability is almost the same as Windows.
Most of the shortcuts using the Windows key were also the same.

Problems after OS installation
I was prepared for it, but there were quite a few problems after installing the OS.
In the old days, I would have investigated and solved everything by myself, but now I can solve most issues just by asking Gemini.
(That was one of the reasons I considered Linux operation in the first place.)
